Hummus Kick Pizza - Cheese Free Vegan Pizza!

This is our all time favourite pizza recipe and is one we have been making for years, even since we first went vegan. Back then, plant based cheese wasn't as readily available in stores as it is now, it was really (like really) expensive and we weren't even sure we would like it. We had only just given up the real stuff and we didn't have high hopes that a plant based cheese would be edible let alone as tasty as regular cheese.


We were a bit unsure whether we would enjoy pizza without cheese, actually we were pretty sure it would be boring but I was listening to or reading a post by Matt Frazier (No meat athlete) who said that pizza without cheese was just pizza to him now, which inspired me to try it out and see if I could get to that same zen like space with regards to pizza.


We tried a bunch of different topping combinations to try to get a pizza that tasted delicious but still had that gooey satisfaction that you get from cheesy pizza's. We finally hit on a winner using hummus as the sauce on the base. The hummus added a creaminess that had been previously missing and we felt that the lack of cheese wasn't as noticeable like it is with a tomato based pizza. So from there we worked our way up the pizza working out what toppings seemed to work best and settled on the Hummus Kick Pizza!


I like to keep things fairly simple when it comes to toppings and not overload the pizza or have too many different and conflicting flavours. I generally use quite a bit of only a few ingredients. This particular pizza has a bit of a kick to it with the finely chopped Jalapeno's and swirl of sweet chili sauce on top. I like a little zing and tingle through each bite of the pizza rather than getting a shock dose with large slices of jalapeno's. But if you like that big zing of jalapeno, then go ahead and keep those bad boys in large slices. If you want to give my idea a try, then just chop them up super fine and sprinkle them liberally over your pizza before topping with the chili swirl.


OK enough chit chat, let's make a pizza!


Hummus kick pizza


INGREDIENTS

1 pizza base (I'm using a home made one, but store bought is fine)

Hummus for the base - also home made but you can use a brought one - a garlic one would be amazing.

Sliced red onion

Mushrooms sliced

Tomatoes sliced

Olives - kalamata or sliced black olives if you prefer

Jalapenos - we like diced so you get a good tingle in every bite

Swirl of sweet chilli or sriracha on top


INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven to 200 degrees Celsius and warm pizza stone. Put the base on the warmed pizza stone then add the toppings starting with the hummus and ending with the swirl of sweet chili or hot sauce. Go crazy and add as much or as little as you want, you're the one who will be eating it after all.
